Secret tourist reveals shock holiday illness facts in Turkey and the Dominican Republic

BBC programme, The Secret Tourist has unveiled shocking standards of hygiene at hotels in Turkey and the Dominican Republic.

If you have suffered a holiday accident that was not your fault, call us free on 080001 54321 or fill in the online claim form

The programme, aired last week, showed poor maintenance conditions at the Fun Royale Tropicale Hotel in the Dominican Republic, followed by last night´s programme which highlighted some shocking standards of hygiene, health and safety at the 4-star Club Armar Hotel in Marmaris, Turkey.

The Fun Royale Tropicale Hotel in the Dominican Republic tested positive for Legionella, which was found in the hot water system. The water in sinks, baths and showers was proved to be dangerous, and could have caused Legionnaire´s Disease which can be fatal.

Birds were also flying around the food serving areas, and droppings were found on tables on chairs. Bearing in mind that over 50% of birds carry the Campylobacter virus, it was not surprising that so many guests were falling ill with diarrhoea, stomach cramps and vomiting.

Buffet food was left out in warm conditions and then served up again the following day, and some of the dishes were found to contain Citrobacter and Salmonella, which can cause severe stomach upsets and gastric illness.

The second Secret Tourist programme was aired last night by the BBC, and concentrated on the shocking standards of health and safety at the 4-star Club Armar Hotel in Marmaris, Turkey.

The programme saw a British family being secretly filmed during a week´s holiday at the all-inclusive Club Armar in Marmaris, and their findings were enough to put off even the most intrepid holidaymaker.

Guests at the Club Armar Hotel complained of reheated food, food with hairs in and a pool of grease which resembled an oil slick on top of the swimming pool. An undercover member of the production team also tested the temperature of food being served, which was 35ºC, and should have been a minimum of 63C. Many guests complained to the management of symptoms of diarrhoea and stomach illness after eating food from the buffet.

Advertised at the ´Jewel of the Turkish Riviera´, the all-inclusive Club Armar Hotel charged nearly £2,000 for the family of four to stay, and they complained of grubby and dirty rooms, stained pillows and smell from a drain outside the door.

E.coli was found in the swimming pool, which would indicate faecal contamination and which can cause serious gastric illness. E.coli was also found in the water and ice.

Hundreds of holidaymakers have made complaints during the past few years after suffering food poisoning due to Salmonella, Campylobacter, Cryptosporidium and E.coli in holiday resorts in Turkey.

If you have suffered any type of holiday illness in Turkey, the Dominican Republic or anywhere else in the world, you can claim compensation when you return to the UK.
