Serious illness reported at Rhodes Holiday Village

Symptoms of gastric illness among holidaymakers who stayed at the resort in June and July, 2010, include: diarrhoea, sickness and stomach cramps, and many victims had to be hospitalised.

As illness swept through the luxury Rhodes Holiday Village, up to 12 ambulances were reported to be parked outside the reception to assist holidaymakers. The bug was also reported to be Cryptosporidium, which causes severe gastric illness.

The Rhodes Holiday Village also called in additional medical staff to help contain the outbreak of illness, and to help large numbers of holidaymakers who continued to fall ill. The bug affected just one side of the Holiday Village, which would suggest it was bacterial, as a viral bug would have affected the whole hotel.

First Choice, the tour operator for the Rhodes Holiday Village, were reported to have told holidaymakers the illness outbreak was caused by an airborne virus, but independent inspectors were sent in to try and find the source of the illness. One source at the hotel claimed the water supply was contaminated with sewage, although this has not been confirmed.
