Food poisoning and gastric illness at Riu Bachata hotel Dominican Republic
There has been a suspected outbreak of food poisoning at the Riu Bachata Hotel, Dominican Republic.Holidaymakers have complained of vomiting, diarrhoea and severe stomach ache, after staying at the Riu Bachata Hotel.A British couple were staying at the Riu Bachata Hotel to get married, but the bridegroom ended up in hospital for three days, including his wedding day. Other members of the wedding party, including the bride, were struck down with gastroenteritis and food poisoning, and some were still ill when they returned to the UK.
The bridegroom said: “When I came out of hospital I was scared to eat the food which all tasted the same anyway. There is no way it should be classed as 5 star and wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy.”Comprising of Club Hotel Merengue, Club Hotel Riu Bachata and Club Hotel Riu Mambo, the Riu resort has had continuing problems during the past five years, and many reports of food poisoning. Guests can use facilities at every one of the hotels in the group, and accommodation is provided on an all-inclusive basis.
One couple at the Riu Bachata Hotel were informed by the hospital that their 18-month old daughter could die from dehydration after being taken ill at the resort. Luckily she is now on the mend.Guests at the Riu Bachata have complained to tour operator Thomson about the state of the hotel and about the outbreaks of food poisoning and illness, and have demanded to know why they were not made aware of previous illness outbreaks when they booked their holiday.
