Facts about holiday food poisoning
Egypt, and other holiday destinations around the world, including the Dominican Republic, Turkey and Spain have seen an increase in food poisoning cases over the past 2 years. Egypt attracts thousands of holiday makers each year who are looking for a holiday with great weather, ancient treasures, such as the pyramids and tombs, combined with modern facilities and amenities.
However, holidays to Egypt don´t always go as planned, and there has recently been an increase in food poisoning cases at holiday hotels. You may have become ill due to food poisoning or poor hygiene standards, or as a result of a dirty swimming pool. You could also have suffered an accident in the hotel which was caused by negligence on the part of the hotel management or the holiday tour company.
Never be fobbed off by tour operator´s claims that food poisoning is caused by an airborne virus or bug. It is caused by a bacterial infection. All- inclusive hotels have also seen an increase in the cases of food poisoning, when food is often left out at room temperature for too long or is not covered.
The last thing anyone wants on holiday is food poisoning. Anyone who has suffered this gastric illness, especially when they have been on holiday with children, will know how horrible it can be. Food poisoning will ruin your holiday and leave you out of pocket, so you should always seek legal advice from a specialist personal injury solicitor when you return to the UK and get the all clear from your GP.
Common food poisoning symptoms which can be picked up on holiday include: Diarrhoea, Nausea and Vomiting, which can lead to serious conditions such as Reactive Arthritis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Common types of Food Poisoning Illnesses include:
Salmonella
Salmonella is caused by unclean food, particularly from holiday hotel kitchens and restaurants, excretions from infected people or animals and polluted surface water (including unused water dispensers). Poultry that is not properly thawed is also a major source of Salmonella poisoning as the melt water contains bacteria.
E.coli
E.coli is associated with eating unwashed fruit and vegetables or meat that has been contaminated after slaughter.
Shigella
Shigella is typically contracted via ingestion (faecal-oral contamination).
Typhoid
Typhoid is caused by the bacterium,
Salmonella enterica serovar typhi, and it is passed on by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with faeces from an infected person. Typhoid doesn´t affect animals, so transmission is only from human to human. Typhoid can also only be spread in environments where human faeces or urine come into contact with food or drinking water.
Amoebic Dysentery
Amoebic Dysentery is normally transmitted by the faecal-oral route, but can be transmitted indirectly through contact with dirty hands or objects touched by an infected person. Often confused with Traveller´s Diarrhoea, Amoebic Dysentery is most prevalent in developing nations.
Giardia Lamblia
Giardia Lamblia often occurs through ingestion of contaminated water or food, or by the faecal-oral route, through poor hygiene practices. The Giardia cyst can survive for months in warm water and can be found in contaminated wells or water systems. It is also prevalent in stagnant water pools, such as ponds or storm water storage systems. Faecal-oral transmission can also occur, particularly in children´s holiday clubs, where children may have poor hygiene practices. Giardia affects humans, and is also common among cats, dogs and birds.
Campylobacter
Common ways to contract Campylobacter are through the faecal-oral route, person to person, through sexual contact, ingestion of contaminated food or water and eating raw meat.
Norovirus
Norovirus is transmitted directly via person to person or indirectly via
contaminated water and food. The source of waterborne outbreaks can include dirty swimming pool water, unhygienic tap water and dirty wells, plus ice machines. Shellfish and salads are the foods most often linked with Norwalk outbreaks, and the ingestion of raw oysters also poses a high risk of infection. Food handlers who are carrying the virus can also contaminate food.
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is usually transmitted by the faecal-oral route via contaminated food or drinking water. The disease is most prevalent in developing countries and in regions with poor hygiene standards.
Cryptosporidium
Cryptosporidium infection is passed on through contaminated substances such as water, uncooked or cross-contaminated food which has been in contact with the faeces of an infected individual or animal. Other sources include untreated drinking water supplies.
Gastroenteritis
Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, and at least half of all cases are caused by Norovirus. Different species of bacteria cause gastroenteritis, including E.coli, Shigella and Salmonella. Sources commonly include badly-prepared food, re-heated meat dishes, seafood, dairy and bakery products. Holidaymakers are particularly at risk if they consume improperly prepared food or contaminated water.
