Swine Flu and Bird Flu hits Egypt and the Dominican Republic
The rise of Bird and Swine Flu viruses have taken their toll on people entering and leaving Egypt and The Dominican Republic. Passengers flying from Chile to The Dominican Republic were recently said to have contracted Swine Flu, and Egyptian authorities are considering quarantining pilgrims when they return from the annual Haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
The outbreak of such viruses as Swine Flu and Bird Flu obviously cause great concern to holidaymakers and threatens the viability of their holiday agreements. The UK Department of Health has published advice in a number of formats to deal with this potential threat.

About Bird Flu
Bird Flu affects both wild and domestic birds, and can spread quickly through poultry farms and live bird markets. As the birds are usually kept close together, the disease spreads like wild fire through saliva and droppings.
The most serious form of Bird Flu is the H5N1 virus. The Department of Health advises that this is currently affecting chickens, ducks and even some wild birds, in parts of Asia, North Africa and Europe. The department has advised holidaymakers and airline passengers that this form of the virus has spread to humans. However, the virus has only caused a small number of illnesses, usually amongst people who have a close contact with infected birds. If you have been on holiday abroad and you think you may have contracted Avian Flu (or Bird Flu), you should seek urgent medical advice on your return to the UK. The next step would be to contact a personal injury solicitor who will advise you whether you may have a claim for holiday illness compensation.
Half of the people contracting Bird Flu have died, but the Department of Health stress that no human cases have occurred in the UK, and there is a very low risk of catching the virus.
Advice from the Department of Health to avoid Bird Flu is:
1. Do not visit poultry farms of markets,
2. Avoid close contact with live or dead poultry,
3. Do not eat raw or poorly cooked poultry, particularly if you see blood in it,
4. Wash your hands often with soap and hot water,
5. If you come into contact with live or dead poultry in an affected country or area, you should be aware of the symptoms of Bird Flu include: A fever, a cough, shortness of breath, a headache, a sore throat, sore eyes and muscle pains.
The advice is simple - if you develop these symptoms whilst abroad following contact with live or dead poultry, seek medical attention immediately and contact a personal injury solicitor for advice.
1. Seek immediate medical attention from your doctor, and inform him of your recent travel history, and explain your symptoms,
2. Always cover your nose or mouth when coughing or sneezing,
3. Use tissues only once, and dispose of them promptly and carefully,
4. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
